Sax Tutorial

Get lessons for Bass Guitar?
I recently decided to try Bass guitar after thinking about it for a while.(By the way, I'm 15) I've tooled around with guitar a little bit, but bass just seems like a better fit. I've got a few questions though:
- Is this a good beginning bass guitar? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Limited-Edition-Les-Paul-Special-Bass-with-Flame-Maple-Top-103997094-i1169267.gc
- Should I try and find a teacher? I have been playing piano for 11 years, so I am very good at reading music and rhythm, and also I play tenor sax. So do you think I will be able to teach myself off of tutorials and what not? Or would it be best to get a teacher?
- And is there anything I should buy with the bass? I have an amp that's pretty old, but usable.
-Can you suggest any songs that have really good bass lines? Anything is fine, I just need some new ideas.
This should be of help with more info on that.

Note: Those who want to sample the book can try out a chapter at the publisher's website.
This might be the only Python book dealing exclusively with text processing. The author says even those with no prior experience in text processing but with basic knowledge of Python can use the book. I doubt this.
Chapter 1 starts with a nice example of a rot-13 encoder. Instead of keeping the first few chapters simple, the author choose to introduce concepts like __main__ trick and OOP in rather haste. This chapter also introduces the readers with Python packaging. I think this section should have been kept in appendix and pip should have been explained along with easy_install with examples.
Chapter 2 is mostly about varying formats of a webserver log file. More details on exception handling would have been nice. This chapter gives a good introduction to a state machine. This chapter also features nicely done sections on handling compressed data and modules like urllib and urllib2. Context manager topic has been nicely put up in this chapter.
Most of the topics in Chapter 3, like string methods and formatting deserved place in the first chapter. These topics are easy to understand and the author has done his bit to explain them properly. This will be a nice and easy going chapter for novice Python coders.
Chapter 4 explains use of Python for parsing csv and JSON format. It is explained properly with enough examples. This chapter introduces the reader to making own Python egg-based package. It could have been kept in Appendix.
Chapter 5 is about regular expressions. Other Python books do not give enough respect to regular expressions. Many a times they put that topic in Advance Section. I am glad that this book has devoted good number of pages to this topic. Section on compiling and then using a regular expression, which is confusing to people coming from other languages, could have come earlier in the chapter with a few more pages dedicated to it. Plus there could have been some examples and more explanation on parser flags in regular expressions.
Chapter 6 is for structured markup processing like XML, SAX and HTML. For some reasons, the author choose to give examples on XML, SAX, DOM before the more familiar HTML parsing. The author has given two examples which take up about 4 pages each. I find it very annoying to read a code this big in a book. A short simpler example would have been sufficient.
Chapter 7 is about templating. The examples for Mako were small, simple and easy to understand. I am not sure whether Mako deserves almost a full chapter in this book. Other systems like Zope and Cheetah were just mentioned.
Chapter 8 is about encoding and i18n. I skimmed through this chapter because I do not have any work in unicode or i18n. But it seems to be easy to understand.
Chapter 9 is about dealing with PDF format, excel format and opendocument. The author choose xlwt over its plain cousin xlrd to read and write excel data. One reason can be that xlrd is often used for reading excel data than writing it.
Chapter 10 is about advanced parsing. This chapter deals with the PyParsing module, the NLTK (Python Natural Language Toolkit) which is meant for processing natural languages like English. This chapter is too advanced to be included in a basis text processing book of Python. Though we deal with Bayesian filtering methods for spam handling in mail servers and clients, this is not what a person new to text processing would start with.
Chapter 11 is about indexing. I learned quite a few useful things from this chapter. But again this might not be a chapter which a novice coder would find useful. The author has described a tool called as Nucular. The author has done well to explain this tool.
Some good points about the book.
The author knows the language well enough to teach it.
It is really a one stop shop for text processing. This book might not give us the exact solution but will certainly show us the way for most of our regular text processing.
Some shortcomings of the book.
It toggles between being a reference book, a tutorial and a cookbook which might make it confusing.
A novice Python programmer might not digest all the concepts in the book easily.
Topics like ways to install modules, pip or setuptools should have been kept in Appendix.
It would have been nice if the author went out of his course a bit and described the pickle, marshal and shelve modules useful for serialization.
One annoying thing about this book is the output of the programs are shown as screenshots, which look ugly. A simple example block would have been just fine.
The price tag it carries is way too much, especially since it comes from a new author and a not very old publication house.
Conclusion : Buy this book, if you want one handy text processing book to address all your text processing needs.

Music Instrument Lessons

Which music instruments can you learn at any age?
Many of us are captured by music, so much so that music has become an important part of our lives. At some point in our lives, many of us want to learn to play a musical instrument. We may thing that taking violin lessons or guitar lessons is fun. Or we may fantasize that we can turn professional and perform on stage. Well, learning to play a music instrument like the ukulele, saxophone, guitar or violin may turn out to be more than a hobby as many people have gone on to teach once they have mastered the instrument.
It does not matter if your child is looking to learn a music instrument, or if you are trying to pick up the skills of playing violin or playing guitar at middle age. In this article, I will outline four music instruments which are relatively easy to learn at any age:
- Ukulele
The ukulele is probably one of the easiest music instrument to play. Unlike the guitar, it has only four strings. The size of the ukulele is also portable, the smallest being the Soprano Ukulele followed by the concert and tenor ukulele. Even a child as young as four years old can take ukulele lessons and learn to play the ukulele by strumming simple chords.
2. Guitar
The guitar is currently one of the most popular music instruments around. Many young children and teenagers aspire to play the guitar at some point in time. The guitar is also relatively cheap, and you can opt to learn the acoustic guitar or the classical guitar as a start. Most teenagers nowadays prefer to learn the acoustic guitar to play pop songs. As with the ukulele, you will need to master how to strum chords for the guitar.
You also have the option to learn to play the electric guitar. However the electric guitar costs more than the acoustic or the classical guitar so if you are on a budget I suggest you start off learning the acoustic and classical guitar.
3. Violin
The violin is as popular as the guitar and can be learnt at any age. Violins come in many sizes, starting with 1/16 size for three year olds, to 1/8 size, ¼ size, half size, ¾ size and full size. The most important step in learning the violin, no matter what age, is to master the proper bowing and fingering techniques.
4. Piano
The piano can be learnt from age five onwards. The most important aspect in learning the piano is to practice constantly and master the playing techniques.

Music Theory Practice

What sort of stuff will I learn in a class called "music theory for non-majors"?
I ask this cause its a class im taking this fall and I already play guitar. what sort of things should I look into / practice to get a head start so I dont have to do as much freaking out when Im taking the class?
Probably the same thing that normal music theory classes teach (note reading, rhythm, texture, structure, etc.) but at a less advanced pace and/or in less depth.

Jazz Music Theory Guitar

What should I learn first to play jazz guitar?
So I've been playing guitar for a few years, mainly blues and rock.
I know the different modes, how basic chords are built, and basic music theory (circle of 5ths, tritone substitution, etc.).
I've also been practicing improvising over standard jazz songs like Autumn Leaves and Blue Bossa.
However, I feel like my jazz studies are very disorganized and inefficient.
My question is, as a generally beginner jazz guitarist, should I concentrate more on learning to solo or comp first.
I feel like there is much less of an emphasis in "online jazz lessons" about comping compared to learning arpeggios and scales for soloing, but I'm sure it is as important if not more so than soloing.
My immediate plan is to re-learn different voicings over the neck, but I would like to have some advice on where to go after that.
Also, if there are any suggested songs to learn, please let me know.
Thanks!
I think Devon gave a very nice, detailed answer. The one thing I would add is that you need to study with a good teacher who is a real jazz player. That teacher will show you how things fit together, how to play authentically in a particular style, and what is commonly expected when playing specific tunes that are considered standard reperetoire. For example, some songs usually begin by playing the last eight bars as an intro (Four by Miles Davis), others play the A section as single-time feel and the bridge as double-time feel (Song for My Father by Horace Silver), and still others play latin on the A section and swing on the B section (A Night In Tunisia by Dizzy Gillespie) ... little things like that, not always in the Real Book, lend important polish and authenticity to your playing. Plus, a good teacher makes the task of learning to play this sophisticated music less daunting and more fun. I've been blessed with several teachers that inspired me to no end, made me want to work as hard as I could to play like they did, gave me great tips and told me funny stories too...
Tip: to organize your studies, first learn all of your chords and arpeggios as 7th chords, then learn them as 9th chords. Then 11th and 13th, then altered dominants (b9, #9, b5, +5 and so on). 11ths and 13ths are dominant chords, even minor 11ths actually act like dom 7ths, so add those voicings to your vocabulary as substitutes for dom7 chords. As you learn each kind of chord, go back over songs you already know, substituting the new versions of the chords that you just learned. For example, play Autumn Leaves with all the chords as 7ths, pretty much like it is in the Real Book. Then see what it sounds like when you use 9ths instead of 7ths. Mix and match to find things you like the sound of. Then start using 13ths in place of the dom 7ths. For example, you could play a wide variety of variations on just the opening chords to Autumn Leaves:
A-7 D7 G∆ C∆
A-9 D9 G∆9 C∆9
A-11 D13 G13 C∆9
AØ D7b9 G7b13 C7#9 // the Eb is common to every chord
and don't forget the TT subs ![]()
A-7 Ab13 G13 C∆
A-7 D9 Db7#9 C∆
heres are two minor 11ths acting like dominants and Ab7#11 acting as a TT sub passing chord to the G:
A-11 Ab7#11 G-11 C∆
As you can see, the possibilities are nearly endless, even if all you do is add extensions (7, 9, 11, 13) and do TT subs.
Mainly, take it slow, listen for what sounds good, and keep it fun. Don't try to learn everything overnight. Good luck.
