Sax Music Sheets

Green Onions sheet music for alto sax?

Does anyone know where to get the sheet music for "Green Onions" on the alto saxophone? I love that song, and I really want to play it on my alto sax.

Ahh..."Green Onions"....one of the first jazz pieces I ever played on alto.
Unfortunately, I don't think you'll be able to find it as just a sax part. I believe it only comes as part of the instrumentation for Green Onions in a jazz ensemble, or, as the conductor's score.
However, if you want the piece badly enough, you can buy the conductor's score alone and write out the sax part on staff paper for your use. You'll have to figure out if the conductors score is in concert pitch or if the parts are transposed, however.

If the score is transposed: each instrument will have a different key signature except for the instruments that are pitched in C (trombone, piano, rhythm section)
If it's in concert pitch: The key signature will be the same for all instruments.

To transpose the sax part, write the music UP a major sixth interval--9 half steps.

The first link is to the conductor's score.
The second link will be to free printable staff paper.

Music Theory Workbooks Piano

Do I really need a Piano Theory book?

What is a theory book anyway? I know it's like a workbook that involves writing and helps you read music.
and what about technic / technique book? Is that important too?

Learning music theory (how to read music and understand the inner workings of it) is extremely beneficial to anyone learning an instrument. So, in my opinion, yes, you need a piano theory book in order to truly learn to play.

A theory book will generally have exercises to help you learn time signatures, key signatures, the notes on the staff, scales, and chord types. It'll also have other basic things such as what dynamic symbols mean, as well as other things.

What To Consider When Buying Saxophone

The saxophone is a great instrument for a child to learn to play music on. It is one of the most widely heard solo instruments, and it is very popular in Jazz Music. It has an extended range, a commanding lower register and a rich middle register. Musicians can perform in large orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, and wind ensembles. The study of the instrument usually involves learning the alto or tenor but may also include the baritone and soprano saxophones. Often those who play the saxophone will also play the flute and clarinet to broaden their experience. When buying saxophone instruments, visit the local music store for advise.

Invented in Brussels, Belgium by Adolphe Sax in 1840, the saxophone is the most recent development in the woodwind family. It is actually a hybrid, the fingering system on the keys is based on the Boehm system from around 1832, which is also true of the flute, oboe and clarinet. The instrument has a conical bore similar to the oboe, a reed and a mouthpiece similar to a clarinet, and a brass body like instruments in the brass family.  A new chromatic fingering system has recently been developed that uses all ten fingers for faster execution.  This new "Schmidt" chromatic system will debut in October 2011 under the "Avatar" brand.
It is a very accommodating instrument to learn, unlike the clarinet and the flute. It is not as prone to sounding airy or squeaky but attention needs to be paid to manual dexterity, articulation, embouchure, or the position of the lips and breathing technique, breathing, hand position, relaxation, support and good posture. It demands a lot of concentration to play. Beginners may have difficulty producing the lower tones and the higher notes and the extended range should not be attempted until the player has a grasp of the proper tone, embouchure and breathing.

The traditional place to start with is the alto, where much of the classical music is written for it. It requires a bit less air to play than a tenor, and the key scale is smaller and is an easier fit for a child's hand. The angle of the air flow and the embouchure is easily transferred to playing other saxophones.

Ask a music teacher or the local music store for referrals when buying ones first saxophone. There are styles for students, intermediates and professionals. The student horn is both affordable and easy to play. It is a good one to start with and can be traded up when the student is ready. The intermediate horn is also very affordable and has some of the features of the professional horn but not the same tonal quality. The professional horns have the best sound, more handwork is done on them and they can have gold and silver plating and have clear or colored lacquer. They have a more substantial feel and the resale value is higher.
The finishing is clear lacquer, but they can come in colors. This does not affect the sound but the plating can. Silver plating produces a brighter tone than lacquered and gold plating has a warmer sound and are more costly.

A used instrument is an option if money is an issue. Check for dents and repairs and the condition of the pads, they should feel soft. Ask if the horn has been re-lacquered, this is not bad but it could dramatically affect the resale value on some vintage collectable saxophones.  For the same money as a used pro instrument, a new intermediate sax could also be purchased.

Beginners often start with a hard rubber or plastic mouthpiece with a low baffle and a small tip opening. A reverse ligature is best with the screws on top. A good quality reed is important as this is where the sound vibrates. A sturdy harness or neck strap is recommended. A reed re-surfacer (300-400 grit sand paper on a flat piece of glass), reed trimmer and reed case are important for reed care. Use a string swab or a bottle brush type "padsaver" (also known as a "stuff-it") to clean the saxophone body tube.  The neck and mouthpiece can be cleaned with a small bottle brush with baking soda (a toothbrush can also be used on the mouthpiece.  A music stand, metronome, tuner, and beginning method books complete the package for a beginner. Buying saxophone can be done online fairly risk free if the sax is well reviewed and there is a reasonable length return policy (at least 15-30 days).  Your saxophone teacher might also have some good recommendations for a saxophone.

How To Learn To Fly Fish

There are many things in the world that you can learn how to do on your own. Most people can quickly teach themselves how to back a cake or how to play certain musical instruments. It may be a simple task to read a book and understand how to paint a wall or trim your hedges. However, there are many things that you cannot learn on your own. It is not easy for the average person to teach him or herself how to rock climb. It may also require a person to take lessons in order to learn how to play a complex instrument. Most people need to have a basic understanding of how a building works before they can build a shed without help. Fly fishing is one of these things. As simple as it may look, it is not as easy as picking up a fly rod and heading to the water; you have to learn fly fishing basics first.  If you do not, you will wind up coming home at the end of the day wet, aggravated, and without any fish.

Do Your Research

The first part of learning fly fishing basics is to do your reading. Research fly fishing basics on the internet and at your local library. There are many different magazines devoted solely to fly fishing and fly fishing basics—subscribe to one and read it regularly. Fly fishing is much like other sports. While the “rules” for fly fishing are not rules that will get you disqualified or make you lose points like in other sports, these rules will help you to fish better and catch more fish. Learning fly fishing basics means learning these “rules.”

Get A Mentor

All of these basics cannot be learned by simply researching the topic and reading about it. You must actually get in the water and do in order to learn fly fishing basics in their entirety. When you are just beginning to learn how to fly fish, it is best to get a mentor to show you the basics. You want to find someone to help you that is an experienced fly fisherman.  This person can help you learn fly fishing basics and may even have a fly fishing tip or two to share with you. You will learn the most invaluable information about fly fishing from someone who has actually been fly fishing for many years. If you do not know anyone who fly fishes, look for local meetings in your area for fly fishermen or ask around at your local bait shop. If there is a place to fly fish in your community or neighborhood, chances are that others are doing it besides you!

If you know the fly fishing basics through research and know how to implement them through learning first hand, you should be a pro fly fisher in no time! Who knows, in a few months you may have someone asking you to be their mentor in learning fly fishing basics!

Choosing The Ideal Prom Theme And Prom Dresses To Match It

The prom dresses you choose must make heads turn during your prom night. Nonetheless, your gown may also go with your school’s special theme. Below are a few prom theme ideas to help you determine what gown to wear.

Paris at Night: Recapture a evening in Paris by making this romantic prom theme. Get started by painting a large mural of the Eiffel Tower and adding gold glitter to mimic the Eiffel Tower’s lights at night. Rent out a large garden arc and place at the venue entrance. Make use of artificial vines along with Christmas lights to embellish the arc. Make use of dark butcher paper to produce a path from the entrance right up to the actual party area. Utilize gold tulle in order to line the sides of the path. You can place old-world style lampposts leased from a party rental store on either side of the path.

Hawaiian - It’s just like a beach party, but a lot more sophisticated. Set up a grass hut, palm trees, a back drop of the ocean and sand-colored gossamer to produce a prom paradise. Include a cascading waterfall making use of metallic blue sheeting and you have a good picture opportunity. Dress the tables with grass skirting, hand out tiki glasses, even place a cut-out of a Tahitian God in the corner. Hang seagulls from the ceiling, add paradise flowers and some seashells, several sea blue background paper and metallic blue paper for water and you are done! If you have the time, you might want to make a tropical in the center of the room (another new photo opportunity or even a spot for your king and queen to relax!). You may even want to provide leis, beachcomber hats and grass skirts for fabulous pics too. This concept works very well with the weather, as many proms are held when it's finally getting nice out, and it leads to various nice decorations. Grass skirts, surf and sand, leis, plus a light hearted feeling abound at a Hawaiian themed prom.

Retro Evening: The 80's provide some classic music as well as costume ideas that would be a perfect fit for prom. In addition, since only a couple of decades have passed since Michael Jackson was still the king of pop, the concept is still new. Give a few Madonna tracks to the Dj and beautify the gym with 1980's collectibles for a night to recall.

All that Jazz : Cut-outs of jazz players, black and white balloons imprinted with musical notes, sax and trumpet cut-outs to hang from the ceiling along with silvery 3’ musical notes all make this concept worth doing. Since the majority of jazz clubs were adorned in black and white in the 20’s and 30’s, stick to that. Adorn the tables with black and gold sheets, and spread a few votives circled by strings of pearls for centerpieces. Provide fedoras for the guys, and feather boas for the women when it is time for a picture op.

Prom dress is available to add spice to your prom evening. Make sure to choose the great dress to complement your own style and your concept as well. Have a great time on your prom!

Sax Tabs Notes

sax tabs notes
Can you tell me how to convert violin tabs to notes?

My daughter is taking violin lessons through her school, and they are learning through tabs. I, myself play the clarinet and sax and never heard of tabs before. The summer is here and I would like to begin teaching her theory and scales for practice but i don't know how to convert tabs to notes. A1 = ? Is there a site that has a chromatic scale written in tabs? Any help would be appreciated.

I never knew tabs could be written for violin. There aren't any frets, so I reckon it'd be rather difficult. What is written for violin in tab notation anyways? It'd be unneccessary, unless you want to teach her tab notation, in which case - don't.

The question really doesn't make any sense. A chromatic scale just goes up a semitone each note and so 1 semitone = 1 fret. But seeing as it's a violin, there are no frets and there shouldn't be any tabs. If you see any, burn them with fire.
