What is more important in a marching band?
Is a tuba or a baritone/euphonium more important in a marching band and concert band. I am in High School playing the baritone/euphonium, and am faced with having no other low brass come up next year. After this year, we will have trombones, but 1 baritone, myself, and no tuba. Should I switch to tuba from marching and concert bands next year, or is the band ok without the tuba?
If it were my band, I'd want a tuba. A tenor sax or trombone can double the baritone/euphonium part but there's not much that can double a tuba.
As a player (and I did face this back in 9th grade), learning to double on tuba is a very useful skill for a euphonium player. Especially if you plan to study music in college. There are a lot more tuba playing ops than there are euphonium playing ops. But, euphonium is a much more fun instrument (my opinion) and a great solo horn. Don't put it away, play them both. It wouldn't hurt to learn trombone too - then you open jazz band playing ops.
We call the person that plays trombone/euphonium/tuba a 'low brass specialist' and in the professional music world, he finds work.
