Alto Sax Sound

alto sax sound
What is the difference between a good alto sax sound and a bad one?

It all depends on what you are going for. For a classical sound, as others have said, you want a round, warm, non-airy sound. For jazz ensemble, the sound isn't as big of a deal because the ensemble actually mixes it all together and makes it sound good. If you listened to a lot of the swing band players in the 50s and 60s, their tone sounded like crap, but by the time the blended sound made it to the audience, it sounded great. For small jazz groups, you may want a different sound. Listen to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Their tone is actually not that pretty to listen to.

Learning To Play The Saxophone: What You Should Consider To Get Started

Like starting any other musical instrument, learning to play the saxophone will take some time to get the hang of how it works. With a little time and patience, you will start to enjoy sax music before you know it.

There are a few things to keep in mind before you start learning to play the saxophone. First, ask yourself whether it's you (assuming you're an adult) or a child that wants to learn, since there are different saxophone types on the market. Some are better suited to young children because of their size, while others are more preferable for the adults. Some tend to be easier for beginners to learn, while others are an excellent choice for advanced players. Ask your saxophone/music shop to share with you what they think may be your best option.

Most people will either want to learn in a classroom setting or work with a private instructor to begin learning how to play the saxophone. If you have no idea where to start looking for these classes and instructors, check out your local community centers, music shops or local phone directory to start investigating where these classes are held.  There are also online saxophone lessons available that utilize Skype video conferencing.

For those adventurous types who are looking to learn on their own, you can buy yourself some good quality instruction books. There are a  few beginning saxophone self teaching books available online but almost all of them with play-along CD's are written for the alto saxophone in e-flat.

Once you are comfortable with this positioning, the next step is to learn how to control your breath, since it is important to allow a steady flow of air as you play. As you blow air into the saxophone, the air will hit the reed and create various sounds depending on which key you were pressing at the moment.

Learning the saxophone is a skill that will take quite some time to master. It is also going to take time to learn how to breathe comfortably while you are playing, so try not to get too frustrated in the beginning if it seems tiring or a slow process. It takes time to master these skills. If it seems tiring in the beginning, you might want to consider some basic breathing exercises to strengthen your stamina.

By practicing every day, you will improve your skills over time. As you are learning the basic techniques, and if you decide to learn on your own, you may want to consider purchasing or borrowing DVDs which will show how the techniques are being performed correctly. This can be a very helpful tool for some beginners.

Introduction To Saxophone Lessons

Music can work wonders in your life. Contrary to what you probably have in mind, singing is not the only way to experience it first-hand. If you’re not into singing, you still got an alternative—playing a musical instrument. This will give you enough satisfaction and fullfilment to appreciate music without self consciousness.

You can choose among several musical instruments.  Let your music preference guide you. If you like soul music or Jazz, saxophone is for you. Playing this wonderfully elegant brass instrument will give you a beautifully memorable tone that calms the mind and uplifts your spirit.  Many find this instrument exceptionally unique and personal. A solo saxophone can easily grab the attention of an audience with a passionate rendition of a song that people can relate to. Impressive, isn't it?

Playing the saxophone can be relaxing.  If you live a very hectic life, playing the sax can give you a brief moment of peace and eventually make you feel better after a stressful day. If you can borrow a sax from a friend or neighbor, then try it out and see how you like it.  If you find it interesting, find a music school that offers saxophone lessons or get a professional sax player to teach you. If you have a genuine love for this instrument and you can afford it, then it will be a good thing to buy one of your own.  It would help a lot in your training, and you can do more practice sessions on your own.

Saxophone lessons are divided into three parts: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Beginner

The beginner saxophone lessons will teach you the basics.  You will be familiarized with the saxophone and get to explore its parts. You will be taught how to properly hold the instrument, finger movements, correct breathing and posture.  Beginners usually start to play alto or tenor sax because they are the simplest to learn.

Intermediate

After mastering the basic lessons, you can now progress to the more difficult intermediate level.  In this module, you will use the basics you’ve learned to improve your skills. You will be taught stimulating exercises to give you the skills to control breathing.

Advanced

In this advanced saxophone lessons, your skills will be put to the test. You will be playing your sax to different music genres. Your versatility will be measured as you play jazz, reggae and classical. However, getting to this level is not easy.  You need concentration and a lot of practice.

Practice always makes perfect. But too much practice can also be a drag. To maintain an exciting practice run, they should be made shorter but more frequent. You would have avoided the danger of getting so tired of the instrument that you do not want to handle it again in the near future. However, to be really good at playing sax, you should practice at least an hour regularly.  Make sure you put your mind and heart to what you’re playing; otherwise, your practice session would just be futile.

As a beginner, you have a lot of time to make up your mind.  If you’re willing to give full concentration on your sax lessons, go ahead and give it your best shot.
