An Overview on Flamenco and Spain’s Music

Music is a main type of art that uses sound as its medium; components of music are pitch, melody, harmony, tempo and rhythm. Music indeed presents unique roles in different cultural settings; some utilize it for political agenda, some for religious worship, some use it to call down rain or to woo women during courtship.

Spain has her share of many different music and dance method and they are as varied as the diverse kinds of architecture that you can find all over the country which are representative of the era when they were constructed. Then the Visigoths, an East Germanic tribe also came, as well as the Jews, and also the Moors came; these greatly influenced and affected Spain’s musical style and form. It would be much more interesting to study the history of Spain by studying its language; basic Spanish is a perfect technique to start and this can be easily done by starting off with basic lessons from sites like Rocket Spanish. Rocket Spanish Download is an excellent tool that can aid you in learning to speak Spanish.

One music and dance art form that symbolized the Spanish culture is the Flamenco; in fact, numerous people have a misconception that it is Spain’s national dance. Ironically, Flamenco is actually not famous in the whole Spain; it’s only famous in a certain parts, particularly the Andalusian region of Spain and in a few of the smaller surrounding regions. Its surrounding areas have music that can be very dissimilar from what Andalusia has because several different countries have affected Spain in the arts of music.

Flamenco, an Andalusian cultural folk music, has three parts; one is cante or song, the baile or dance and the guitarra or guitar. The style of Flamenco that originated from Andalusia is popular for its complex and fast passages, and the dance is described by audible footwork similar to tap dancing. The art form persist to grow even though it was largely ignored by other regions.

An undeniable fact states that Flamenco sprang from the lower levels of society in Andalusia; during the turbulent times that many people have prejudices against Gypsies which various people believe have influence on the roots of Flamenco. Studies also presents that there is a link between gypsy dance culture and the descendants of Moorish music in the 8th century until 17th century in the origins of Flamenco; still many also believe that apart from gypsy dance and Moorish music, there is also influence of music from Egypt, India, and the Byzantine church which played a big part in shaping this art form. Since Flamenco is being practiced by the poor, upper class society and historians put in little time in recording and studying it, thus very little written records can be read about it. Unfortunately, most of the people from the Andalusian regions were of persecuted lineages, they were also mostly lacking in literacy so they had no way of jotting down their own cultural beliefs for posterity; most of the history of Flamenco has been lost and greatly altered because it had only been passed on through oral tradition.

Until today, much of the history of the Flamenco is still unclear. However, one face is clear which is that Flamenco has shaped dance cultures worldwide.
