The Link Between Learning Music Theory and Guitar Playing

Some people might believe that if they can carry a tune or play an instrument without learning how to read music sheets, that learning music theory is unnecessary. After all, there could be no real substitute for one’s ability, right? There’s so much more of your music which you can show better if you happened to know music theory even if you can already play good music, be an effective member of a rock band or become an excellent musician.

If you are in doubt of whether to take music theory or not, here is an analogy that might be pretty helpful in making up your mind. Obviously, not all people are born to become writers. There are only a select few who can really write and translate their thoughts into poetry or prose. But studying the intricacies of language such as grammar can make a writer more effective in sending his thoughts and ideas because learning could always become an additional tool. Writers must be versed in wordplay therefore they are required to know language and grammar. The discipline of understanding a language’s grammar develops your grasp of the art of writing. But having to know the ins and outs of language and grammar does not follow that one can be a writer that easily.

A person who is fond of cooking is an instance. Some people can naturally understand how ingredients can work and how a combination of flavors can make up a wonderful dish. A person can sometimes naturally understand how certain ingredients work and how taste and flavor can be a wonderful dish. A wonderful dish made of a combination of tastes can be understood by someone who naturally knows how ingredients work. Understanding flavors is a wonderful gift that could be developed if one can actually go to a cooking school to learn the fundamentals of cooking. By doing so, a structured approach to learning will be attained as well as make sense of your inborn talent to understand flavors.

Simply put, in order to be able to bend rules, one would have to know the rules first. Acknowledging that you can manage to play guitar by ear alone is great. Steve Krenz gives it to us raw in his course, Learn & Master Guitar. You can be a great guitar player just by having that talent to recognize notes and put them together even with no music sheets. So as to genuinely master playing the guitar, you have to find out music theory. Having other musicians to hear you music is easier especially if you write your own music because you speak the same language and have the identical education on the “grammar” and technicalities of music. Its given that even if you know the notes of music as well as the back of your hand, nothing can overcome real talent.

However, even if finding the discipline that it takes to truly master music theory can’t make an artist out of a musician, it could help you learn how to make good music. Good music could become an inspired music someday. At the end, consistency and hard work will certainly pay off.

The advantage of technology is that more information is also already made available for you on the web. The one thing you should do is search and it’s there.
