Tenor Ukulele- What You Should Know About Tenor Ukuleles
There are four sizes of ukuleles that include concert, soprano, baritone and tenor. The tenor ukulele and two others, the soprano and concert of tuned with a high G. Of the three, the tenor is the largest with a scale length of 17 inches. The tenor is popular with musicians, especially those who use it in a solo act and use it for fingerpicking. Because of its larger size, the tenor ukulele produces a deeper, richer tone and louder than the smaller ukuleles. These ukes also tend to be more expensive because of their size and the fact that more experienced musicians mainly use them.
This ukulele has a choice of tuning. You can tune your tenor ukulele to either a low or a high G. Each has its advantages based on the use of the instrument. The high G tuning gives the instrument its distinctive sound and makes the uke great for chordal accompaniment as it create close harmony chords. The high G is great for single note runs and it allows for letting the notes ring into each other creating a harp-like affect. John King, a well-known ukulele player known for his interpretation of classical musical, calls this style of playing "campenella."
The low G broadens the ukulele's range adding more base notes. A tenor ukulele tuned to low G has its advantage when playing solo instrumental pieces. The chords have a fuller sound and you can accompany your melodies with the bass notes. Musicians using low G must change their styles to get the full advantages from either high or low G. Professional player use both tunings. The tenor ukulele can also be tuned to high or low A or high A for D tuning. The tuning chosen depends on the sound you want and music style played.
There is a vast choice when making a purchase. Price ranges from $200 and up for the tenor ukulele. If there is not a music store near you that sells a variety of ukuleles, you can always buy some quality instruments online. Look for ukulele with the sturdiest construction and wood fret boards, not plastic. There are also many sizes, colors and designs to choose from, so it is possible to find what you need in a ukulele. Some choices include six and eight-string ukuleles. The different string types provide different tuning, sound and volume depending on the size of the instrument.
